I will be attending the Bayreuth Festival this year in early August. I will be attending seven performances including the new Meistersinger, the current Tristan featuring René Pape as King Marke, last year's Parsifal, and Frank Castorf's controversial Ring. |
The live broadcast of the new Bayreuth Production of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg from July 25, 2017 can be streamed on BR-Klassik. Click HERE for more details. |
The new production of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg will be directed by the Australian Barrie Kosky. Mr. Kosky, who describes himself as a "Jewish Gay Kangaroo" will face a Wagnerian work that has been problematic for many. It is the most nationalistic of all Wagner's works, taking place in a city that is the cradle of German art, as well as the cradle of the Nazi Party. Further, the opera contains one character often portrayed as a caricature of a Jewish critic of Wagner's time. The conclusion of the opera is its most controversial part. The leading character calls on the people of Nuremberg to protect the "Holy German Art" from its enemies. Read the article on Mr. Kosky and his new Bayreuth production HERE. |
